12-year-old Amir, the reluctant protaganist, has always been seeking his father's approval in everything he does. And his loyal buddy, Hassan, would do anything he asks. Both grew up together, and spent their entire chilhoods with each other. But as with all relationships, there is always someone who gives and one who takes. And in the winter of 1975, while resolving to win the local kite-flying competition to gain his father's approval, Amir made a decision which changed their lives forever. Soon after the Russians invaded their country, the family flees to America. However, while enjoying his new life in America, Amir knows that one day, he must return to his home country to find that one thing he always craved - Courage.
